@BathysphereHat They're thinking about the result, not the physical motion. Making a light, not rubbing sticks together. Flint&steel, switch, the Clapper... they're all ways to make light, so you can apply the same law to all of them. Interesting question to ask your rabbi... can you carry around a disconnected switch and flip it as a fidget toy on Shabbos? I think you could, but can't find any discussion.
