Retired chemical engineer. Currently feeding my intellect with mammalian #biology and #microbiology, the network and complex system aspects of biology, and the brain/body mechanisms via the vagus nerve.
Recent-ish love of "The Hidden Half of Nature: The Microbial Roots of Life and Health" and "I Contain Multitudes".
Favorite papers as of May 2023 (so far): "The Danaid Theory of Aging", "Systems Biology of Phenotypic Robustness and Plasticity"

However, as I've been interacting in the #Fediverse, I've discovered an interest in what it takes for a non-extractive #SocialEcosystem to survive and thrive (sustainably).

Hi tyre kickers! how's things? what can we do in a group?
According to our latest research, the global prosthetic joint infections treatment market size reached USD 2.59 billion in 2025, reflecting the growing incidence of joint replacement procedures and subsequent infection risks worldwide. The market is expanding at a robust CAGR of 7.6% and is forecasted to reach approximately USD 5.02 billion by 2034. This growth is primarily propelled by the increasing prevalence of prosthetic joint surgeries, the rising geriatric population, and rapid advancements in infection management protocols. The ongoing development of novel antibiotics and minimally invasive surgical techniques is also contributing significantly to the market's upward trajectory through the 2026-2034 forecast period.
Usability feedback re. Circles. It's a while since I read the notes on this release of Bonfire, and now I'm prompted to create a Circle it's not clear to me: what is a circle and how is different from a group?
Consider how some of this info could be made clearer in the UI:
> "A circle is simply a list of people. Bonfire comes with some default circles, like “guests” and “people I follow,”
Perhaps show existing circles in the landing page, so people can see what already exists at the same time they're prompted to create circles?
> and you can also make your own, like “friends”, “classmates”, “monster movie fans” or “people who don’t like monster movies.”
Perhaps include thes examples in the prompt to create circles. I note this prompt currently reads "create circles to organise people you follow" but I haven't yet followed anyone, so this seems a bit premature.
Creating a circle seems a bit convoluted (especially having to search for people to add). Would it be possible to provide a list somewhere in the Dashboard of people I follow and enable create a circle from there?
And, if I start to create a Circle from the prompt in the dashboard, immediately show people I follow at the same time as prompting me to enter a name for the Circle.
Replies: working how how to reply seems trickier than it should be.
The speech bubble icon signifies "message" to me, rather than "reply". Consider making some of the "No replies yet. Be the first to share your thoughts" text clickable - and especially the large version of the reply icon (remove the ... so it's identifcal to the smaller version of the icon) so people can learn this signifier a bit more easily?
